How to Compare Hotel OTA Commission Costs
A contract-first method for comparing distribution costs without presenting a generic market range as your hotel's actual rate.

Use your agreement, not an internet average
Commission and programme costs vary by contract, property, market, tax treatment, payment model, and optional participation. Retrieve the applicable percentage from the signed agreement, partner extranet, or payout statement before using a calculator.
Booking.com states that accommodation providers pay commission after a completed stay and that Preferred Partner properties pay a higher commission. Its public explanation does not provide one universal rate for every property.
Check the current fee structure
Airbnb's current help page describes split-fee and single-fee structures. It says most hosts on the single-fee structure pay 15.5%, with a typical 14–16% range, and that the structure is mandatory for certain hosts including traditional hospitality listings and many software-connected hosts. Airbnb also states that fees can change.
Treat that as a dated platform rule, not a substitute for the fee shown in your own account. For Expedia and other OTAs, use the commercial terms shown in the relevant partner agreement or statement.
Primary sources
Compare like with like
Create one line per channel and use the same booking period and revenue basis.
- Gross room revenue included in the commission base.
- Base commission or host service fee.
- Optional programme discounts or additional commission.
- Payment, transaction, media, loyalty, and technology costs where applicable.
- Taxes and guest-paid fees only when they affect the hotel's recognised revenue or cost.
Calculator formula
MisMatchMaker's commission calculator uses: OTA bookings × average booking revenue × user-entered commission rate. Its ten-point direct-shift output is a scenario, not a forecast. It excludes operating expenses, cancellation differences, marketing incrementality, taxes, and lifetime value.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average OTA commission rate?
A generic average is not reliable enough for a property decision. Use the exact rate and programme terms in your own agreement or statement.
Does the calculator predict savings?
No. It models arithmetic from your inputs and does not predict whether bookings will shift channels.
Does MisMatchMaker check rate parity?
No. MisMatchMaker compares selected listing-content fields, not room rates.
